This spring, departments in the University of Arizona's College of Science nominated an outstanding senior who went above and beyond during their time as a Wildcat. We are pleased to share their stories as they reflect on their time at UArizona. Next in the senior spotlight series is Caroline Hyland from the department of Computer Science.

College of Science: Why did you choose your area of study?
Hyland: I decided to pursue computer science because of a mandatory programming course at my high school. At first, expected to hate the class, but, to my surprise, I ended up really enjoying it and taking additional computer science classes in high school before deciding to pursue it in college.

COS: Tell us about a class or research project you really enjoyed
Hyland: During my junior year, I had the opportunity to design my own research project for my honors thesis in Spanish and chose to study computer science education in Spanish-speaking countries and the way that the English language dominance of computer science affects how non-native English speakers write and develop programs. As part of the project, I was able to interview computer science professors at universities throughout Latin America and Spain, and I developed a greater understanding of and appreciation for the computer science industry globally.

COS: What is one specific memory from your time at UA that you'll cherish forever?
Hyland: I have been an Arizona Ambassador (campus tour guide) for all four years of undergrad, and I just completed my stole tour, my final tour of campus. Per Ambassadors tradition, I invited my parents and friends, and being able to bring them on my final campus tour was a really special experience.

COS: What is next for you after graduation?
Hyland: After graduation, I will be completing a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Taiwan before returning to the University of Arizona to complete my Ph.D. in Computer Science.
