The Bilingual Advantage: Supporting Children Learning Two Languages

In order to best support children who are learning two languages, we must first understand which practices and common advice truly helps them learn and which are misinformed. The preservation of the home language is essential for the development of the second language. Common misunderstandings about bilingual development will be debunked and information on how two languages are learned and represented will be discussed. 

"The Bilingual Advantage: Supporting children learning two languages", a talk given by Dr. Genesis D. Arizmendi, Provost Early Career Fellow at The University of Texas at Austin, will discuss common misunderstandings about bilingual development and how two languages are learned and represented. This event will be hosted both in-person at the University of Arizona in the Environmental and Natural Resources Building Room S107 (1064 E. Lowell St.) and virtually via Zoom on Thursday, September 29 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. *Please note: This is a bilingual presentation and will be given in both English and Spanish.

Para apoyar a los niños con el aprendizaje de dos idiomas, primero se necesita saber qué sugerencias en verdad les ayudan a aprender y cuáles no. El mantenimiento de la lengua materna es fundamental para el desarrollo del segundo idioma. Hablaremos de los malentendidos comunes sobre el desarrollo bilingüe y se presentará información sobre cómo se aprenden y se representan dos idiomas en la mente de un hablante.

La Dra. Génesis D. Arizmendi es una investigadora en la Universidad de Texas en Austin, con nombramientos en Educación Especial y el Centro de Tejas para la Promoción de la Equidad. Es una terapeuta del habla y lenguaje que se especializa con estudiantes y pacientes hispanohablantes del suroeste de los Estados Unidos. La meta de su programa de investigación es integrar mejores prácticas de evaluación y tratamiento para reducir las desigualdades educativas en la niñez.
