Mathematics is basic to all of science and technology, and the Department of Mathematics prepares students to participate in these enterprises. The important strands of pure and applied mathematics are reflected in our course offerings: calculus, probability theory and statistics, abstract and linear algebra, geometry, number theory and discrete mathematics are all represented along with computational mathematics and mathematical modeling. The department offers a wide range of courses aimed at the preparation of pre-college teachers. The integration of research and education is evidenced by the many educational and outreach programs that have been developed in the department.
