Marine Discovery

Sponsored by the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and now sited at Flandrau Science Center, these public outreach field trips to the University of Arizona are designed to teach K-8 grade students in the Tucson area about the importance of our oceans. Marine Discovery activities include shark dissection, squid dissection, fish diversity, plankton race, and a living tidepool; Marine Discovery: The Voyage Begins includes general hands-on marine biology. Since its launch in 1995, Marine Discovery, serving over a thousand K-12 students per year, has become one of the most popular science outreach programs at the University of Arizona. Annual program assessments indicate that Arizona teachers appreciate the opportunity for their students to learn hands-on marine science:
“It allows students to see and touch marine life that we have only been able to read about in our text.”
“Our desert kids love it!”
“When studying oceans in Arizona, it is hard to find items to explain ideas. This program adds that piece.”

Teachers also share how their students benefit from coming to the UA campus and meeting the undergraduates who run Marine Discovery:
“Our workshop leader did an excellent job engaging the students.  Great role models!”
“The program leaders are enthusiastic and obviously love their subject.  Our students need to see that these opportunities are available to them if they study hard!”
“Fabulous and energetic field trip; it will ignite the spark in some of my 5th graders to think about a future in biology!”
