Dean's Board of Advisors
The College of Science Dean's Board is comprised of public-spirited business, technology, science and civic leaders. Board members share a deep concern for the future of society and the crucial role that science in general, and the College of Science at the University of Arizona in particular, must play in shaping this future. The Board works with the Dean to help ensure the resources and public support necessary to further excellence in the sciences at the University of Arizona.
Arthur L. Herbst, MD
Chair
Joseph B. DeLee Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, University of Chicago
Arthur Herbst received his AB degree (physics) from Harvard College and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1959. His research and clinical careers have focused on gynecologic oncology, primarily with the effects in humans of intrauterine exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES). He was Director of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and served as the Head of its Gynecologic Oncology Division. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine (National Academy of Sciences), was awarded honorary membership in the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (Great Britain), and received and honorary Doctor of Science from Northeastern Ohio College of Medicine. He has served on numerous national medical committees and journals and has been director of a number of private and public medical corporations.
Lawrence J. Aldrich

Since May 2007, Larry Aldrich has been with UPH (the clinical practice arm for the UA's College of Medicine physicians) in a new senior management role. He remains President of Aldrich Capital Company, an acquisition, management and consulting firm. In 2005, after stepping down as Founder and General Partner of local venture capital firm Valley Ventures III, LP (and venture firm Tucson Ventures LLC prior to that) Mr. Aldrich joined The Critical Path Institute (C-Path) as Chief Operating Officer until January 2007. C-Path is a non-profit organization created as a partnership among the University of Arizona, SRI International and the US Food and Drug Administration to implement innovations in developing new medical therapies. From 1992 to 2000 Mr. Aldrich was President and CEO of Tucson Newspapers, business agent for the Arizona Daily Star and Tucson Citizen. Mr. Aldrich is active in many community leadership and economic development organizations. He completed his BS degree in Civil Engineering at Georgia Tech and his JD at Tulane University Law School.
Susan Bulkeley Butler
CEO, The Susan Bulkeley Butler Institute
Susan Bulkeley Butler is one of America's preeminent experts on the subject of women's leadership development, which is addressed in her new book Become the CEO of You, Inc. Susan was the first woman professional hired by Arthur Andersen and the first woman partner at Andersen Consulting/Accenture. During her 36-year career she was in the fore-front of dramatic changes in the corporate world, and retired as the Managing Partner of the Office of the CEO for Chairman & CEO Joe Forehand. Through her Institute for the Development of Women Leaders, Susan is recognized for her commitment to shaping the women business leaders of tomorrow. She is a graduate of Purdue University, where she received an honorary doctorate in management, and is currently on the Board of Trustees. She is also on the Worldwide Board of JA (Junior Achievement), and the Committee of 200.
Ronald D. Carsten
Chief Engineer, Raytheon
Ron Carsten is the Chief Engineer for Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson. Mr. Carsten has held management and leadership positions involving design and development, flight test and production for several major Raytheon programs. He earned a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Cooper Union and a MS degree in electrical engineering from the University of Massachusetts.
John L. Carter
Director, UniSource Energy
John Carter spent more than 30 years with IBM and was the first general manager of the IBM facility in Tucson. He has held management positions with Burr-Brown Corporation, is currently a director of UniSource Energy, and serves on the boards of many business and community organizations. Mr. Carter earned a degree in civil engineering from Purdue University and MBA from the Wharton School.
Robert L. Davis
First Vice President, CB Richard Ellis, Inc.
Robert Davis is First Vice President of CB Richard Ellis, Inc., a national brokerage services company. Before beginning his real estate career in 1985, Mr. Davis was the head swimming coach and an associate athletics director at the University of Arizona, where he earned his BS in biology. He serves on numerous committees and advisory boards in the Tucson community and at the University of Arizona.
Sally S. Drachman, PhD

Sally S. Drachman is a fundraising consultant, working primarily with non-profit organizations to develop fund raising capabilities. She spent 27 years at the University of Arizona and was named Fund Raising Executive of the Year by the National Society of Fund Raising Executives. She earned a PhD from the UA in 1983.
Kenneth R. Evans
Vice President Geoscience, ExxonMobil Development Company
Ken Evans has worldwide responsibility for all Geoscience in ExxonMobil Development Company. Over the course of his 33-year career with Exxon (now ExxonMobil), he has worked in the vast majority of petroliferous basins in a host of countries. Mr. Evans earned a BS degree in Geology from Western Illinois University and a MS degree in Geophysics from the UA.
Kirtland C. Gardner

Chair, UA Science Master's Program Board
Kirt Gardner joined Corning Inc. after graduating from Williams College. He held many positions within the company and left after 32 years to become an entreprenuer. Characterized by significant successes, his entrepreneurial career as President and CEO of Hunter Environmental Services and President and CEO of General Physics Corporation, lead to improved operations and successful exit strategies, and as President and CEO of NovaNET Learning, Inc. he successfully built the company over an eight-year period. Mr. Gardner currently serves on many company boards and consults to several private companies-Richardson, Apta Software, ePredix, Class.com, Loyaltyworks, and Language Technologies.
James M. Gentile, PhD
President, Research Corporation
Jim Gentile assumed the position of President of Research Corporation in January 2005 following nearly 30 years at Hope College where he held an endowed chair in biology and served as Dean for the Natural Sciences. He has received numerous national and international awards over the years, most recently the Alexander Hollaender Research Excellence Award from the Environmental Mutagen Society and the Cancer Research Medallion from the National Cancer Institute of Japan. He is an AAAS Fellow. Originally from Chicago, Dr. Gentile earned his bachelor's degree from St. Mary's University in Minnesota and MS and PhD degrees from Illinois State University. He spent two years in postdoctoral studies in the Department of Human Genetics at the Yale School of Medicine before accepting his position at Hope College.

Lesley G. Goldfarb has served as a member of the University of Arizona Foundation Board of Directors since 1995 and currently serves as an Emerita Member of the Foundation Board. She has been Chairman of Angel Charity for Children, Inc., Founding Chairman of the Office of Cultural Affairs Advisory Board (UA Presents) at the University of Arizona, past president of the Pima County Medical Society Auxillary and past Chairman of Silver & Turquoise Board of Hostesses. In addition, she has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Tucson Jewish Community Center and the Tucson Jewish Community Foundation as well as the Board of Directors of St. Gregory High School, the Tucson Museum of Art Board and Handmaker Jewish Geriatrics Center Board. She recently completed her term on the Board of Fellows of the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona.
Thomas M. Grogan, MD

Dr. Thomas Grogan, founder of Ventana Medical Systems, Inc., served as Director of the company since its formation in June 1985. He currently holds the position of Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs. Dr. Grogan evaluates the development of novel therapeutics from biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies and assists in the establishment of strategic alliances and other collaborations to develop diagnostic tests for targeted therapeutics. Dr. Grogan is a Professor of Pathology at the UA College of Medicine, where he has taught since 1979. He received a BA in biology from the University of Virginia, a MD from George Washington School of Medicine, and completed a post-doctorate fellowship in hematopathology at Stanford University.
Agnese Nelms Haury

Agnese Haury, Board Member Emeritus, is a strong supporter of UA and College of Science programs, including the effort to build a facility to house the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research. The widow of famed Southwest archaeologist and Arizona State Museum Director Emil Haury, she earned a degree in history from Bryn Mawr College. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the UA in 1999.
Gary Jones

Gary Jones has extensive experience in geophysical methods for oil and gas exploration and production. He has been Chairman of ARKeX, a cutting-edge technology company that specializes in gravity gradiometry since August 2005, and Non Executive Director of OHM, Ltd. since September 2004. Gary is involved in various consulting projects regarding the consolidation of geophysical companies and is a founding board member of Friends of Reach Out, an African AIDS relief charitable organization. From 2000 to 2003 he was President of WesternGeco, the world's largest surface seismic company. He earned a BS degree in geological engineering and his MS in geophysics at the University of Arizona.
Michael J. Kaiserman

Michael Kaiserman has held leadership positions in the design and development activities involving existing systems and advance program concepts at Raytheon for over 25 years. Specializing in propulsion, Mr. Kaiserman represents the company on several technical committees for both government organizations and professional societies. He serves on two University of Arizona advisory boards, one Tucson community board and he is currently on the board of directors of a local business. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in aerospace/mechanical engineering from the UA and a Master's Degree in aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology.

Mike Kasser is President of Holualoa Companies, a real estate investment and development firm. Dr. Kasser earned BA and MS degrees in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a PhD in engineering from the University of Grenoble (France), and a MBA from Harvard University.
Frank L. Lederman, PhD

Frank Lederman served as Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of Alcoa, Inc. from 1995 to his retirement in 2001. He has held senior manager positions with Canada-based Noranda Inc. and with General Electric Company. Dr. Lederman received a MS and PhD in physics from the University of Illinois. He serves on a number of corporate and university boards.

Sid Leach has more than 28 years of experience in litigating patent infringement actions and is a partner in the law firm of Snell & Wilmer, L.L.P. He has successfully litigated patent infringement cases, proceedings before the International Trade Commission, and interference proceedings before the Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Leach was selected for inclusion in the 2007 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the specialty of Intellectual Property Law. Mr. Leach received his J.D. degree from the University of Virginia Law School in 1978, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alabama in 1975. He is admitted to practice in Arizona and Texas, and registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Linda Lohse

Linda Lohse is the managing director of eleven private foundations in Tucson. Active on numerous boards of directors, she was named Tucson's 1998 Woman of the Year by the Tucson Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and the 2002 Alumnus of the Year by the UA College of Nursing.
Alex J. Mautner

Alex Mautner is the CEO and co-founder of Arizona Microsystems, L.L.C., an intellectual holding company that commercializes proprietary technology in the field of optical and electronic polymers. A graduate in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan, Mr. Mautner has over 35 years of experience in private enterprise and the public sector. He has served as Commissioner of Transportation for the City of New York as well as a member of a presidential task force for domestic economic development. Recently, he has been responsible for five new high tech start-ups, four of which are based on UA inventiveness. Mr. Mautner is also a business mentor at the UA's new Center for Innovation helping new tech ventures develop their business strategy, and is a founder of the College of Science's Galileo Circle which supports excellence in science.

Stephen Naruk is Principal Structural Geologist with Shell Exploration and Technology Research Company. He joined Shell in 1987 as an exploration geologist after completing MS and PhD degrees in geosciences at the UA. Dr. Naruk serves as chair of the UA Geosciences Advisory Board.
James R. Patton, Jr.

James Patton was Founding Partner and Chairman (emeritus) of the law firm Patton Boggs, LLP. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina (BA cum laude) and Harvard Law School (JD) with postgraduate studies at Yale University. Some of the boards he has served on include the Smithsonian National Board, National Museum of Natural History, and Whitney Museum of Art. He is a past lecturer in international law at Cornell and other law schools.

Kathleen Perkins

Named "one of the highest ranking women in optics" by Oliver Graydon, Editor-in-Chief of Opto and Laser Europe, Kathleen Perkins is recognized for her original thinking and leadership in the international optics community. Ms. Perkins holds a BS in Marketing from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia (1980). She currently sits on the boards of the Arizona Optics Industry Association, the Southern Arizona Leadership Council, the UA's Institute for Collaborative Bioresearch (BIO5), and the UA Science Center. In August 2007, she was also elected to the board of Society of Photo Instrumentation Engineers, known as www.spie.org
Henry Pollack, PhD
Professor of Geosciences, University of Michigan
Henry Pollack has been a Professor of Geophysics at the University of Michigan for more than 40 years. His research has focused on the temperature of the Earth, both today and in the geological past, and he is an expert in global climate change. He earned his PhD at Michigan in 1963 and chaired the Geological Sciences Department from 1988 to 1991.
Robert J. Rose

Robert Rose is a registered patent attorney and the managing partner in the firm Sheldon Mak Rose & Anderson. Recognized as one of the leading patent lawyers in California, Mr. Rose has worked for the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S Attorney and Twentieth Century Fox Films. He is an adjunct professor of law at the University of La Verne College of Law. He graduated with a BS degree in physics and astronomy from the University of Arizona and also received his JD from UA. He also holds an MS in imaging science from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
John P. Schaefer, PhD

John Schaefer received his BS in Chemistry from the Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn, NY; his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana; and his Postdoctoral Fellow from the California Institute of Technology. He began his career as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of California (Berkeley) before coming to the UA in 1960. He served on the UA faculty for 21 years, held titles of Head of the Department of Chemistry and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, and served as President from 1971-1982. In 1982, he joined Research Corporation and served as President and CEO until December 2004. He currently serves as President of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope project (LSST). He is an avid nature and landscape photographer and a regular contributor to many professional photographic journals. Dr. Schaefer remains active in national and international councils, committees and professional organizations.

Nick Soloway is a registered patent attorney and founder and managing partner of the firm of Hayes Soloway P.C. He is recognized as one of the leading patent attorneys in the United States and listed in Woodward White's The Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Soloway has worked with technology-based companies for 40 years and has founded two high-tech companies and a chapter of the MIT Enterprise Forum. He is active with a number of community organizations, and is a past president of the Board of Directors of the American Stage Festival. Mr. Soloway holds a BS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a LLB from Boston College where he taught chemistry while attending law school.

John Sutter is an Emeritus Research Geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Tucson. Dr. Sutter has served on advisory boards at Lehigh University, Rice University, the National Science Foundation, and the Geological Society of America. He earned his PhD in geology at Rice University in 1970 and was a faculty member at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and at The Ohio State University before joining the USGS in 1979.
A. Wesley Ward, Jr., PhD

Wes Ward recently retired after 34 years with the federal government. Most recently he was the Southwest Regional Executive for the U.S. Geological Survey, headquartered on the campus of the University of Arizona. In that position he oversaw all geological, hydrological, biological, and geographical research and operations of the USGS in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Utah, and Nevada. He now is exploring new frontiers of consulting, community outreach, and hiking the hills of southern Arizona. Dr. Ward earned his PhD in Quaternary and Planetary Geology at the University of Washington.
