Outreach | K–12 Teachers
Resources
Teachers can borrow natural history kits created from our scientific collections of birds, mammals, fish, invertebrates, reptiles and amphibians. Children can tour the Lunar and Planetary Sciences Laboratory, construct a mini Mars Lander, and do computer simulations as part of the MARS Gamma Ray Spectrometer Outreach Program.
The Southern Arizona GEMS Education (SAGE) Center is also on campus. GEMS, Great Explorations in Math and Science, is a well-respected curriculum materials development and teacher professional development program. We have an extensive lending library of GEMS material available to K-12 teachers.
Kits and Materials for Loan
Center for the Mathematics Education of Latinos/as (CEMELA)
CEMELA brings together experts in mathematics education, mathematics, language, and culture to collaboratively work on improving the mathematics education of low-income Latino students.
GEMS Education Center
The Felix Mystery, Acid Rain and Discovering Density are a few of the GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science) guides and kits available for loan. GEMS are a proven resource for excellence in inquiry-based science and mathematics instruction.
Natural History (Zoological) Collections at the UA
Natural History Kits are available for loan complete with specimens from the fish, mammal and invertebrate collections. Kits include the Benton Shell Kit, Animals without Backbones, and Fish Diversity.
The Space Imagery Center
The Space Imagery Center provides access to planetary images for the public, and to scientists for research. Tours and lectures for school children are available.
Support for New Teachers
Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers (CRR)
The Center for Recruitment and Retention Project brings together first and second year middle and high school mathematics teachers, and provides monthly in-classroom support.
Tucson Area Physics Teachers Organization (TAPT)
The group meets monthly as a support and social network and to exchange technical and administrative information for physics teachers. Each monthly meeting features a speaker on a topic in physics or physics education.

Do the Math TV Show
"Do the Math" is a live 60-minute television show for math students and math teachers.
Mars/Gamma Ray Spectrometer
Workshops and curriculum illustrate several field-tested space science activities on the solar system and Mars for use in elementary and middle school classrooms.
Science and Mathematics Center Master Calendar
The Science and Mathematics Center features an online monthly calendar of courses, workshops and conferences for teachers taking place at the University of Arizona.
Science and Mathematics Center Newsletter

The Biology Project
The Biology Project is an interactive online resource for learning biology, designed for the college and high school level, but useful for all types of interested people.
The Tree of Life Web Project
The Tree of Life documents the diversity of the world's creatures, from frogs and flowers to dinosaurs and protists. The site is used by scientisits and students for up to date, accurate information on organisms. An educational page includes opportunities to build your own treehouse on a favorite animal or plant.
Tucson Natural History Website
A website with many images, powerpoint presentations, and earth science modules on the Tucson area.
UA/NASA Space Grant Program Pre-College Mini-Grants
Teachers can apply for funding to do space science projects in their classrooms.
