This spring, departments in the University of Arizona's College of Science nominated an outstanding senior who went above and beyond during their time as a Wildcat. We are pleased to share their stories as they reflect on their time at UArizona. First in the senior spotlight series is Cece Roessle from the department of Neuroscience.

Cece Roessle
Neuroscience

College of Science: Why did you choose your area of study?
Roessle: Ever since high school, I have been passionate about mental health due to my own struggles. I decided to study neuroscience because I was intrigued by the potential we have to heal others. I was really interested in learning how we can advance our understanding of psychological and psychiatric disorders.

COS: Tell us about a class or research project you really enjoyed
Roessle: I really enjoyed studying the role of TMEM184B in axon degeneration in Dr. Martha Bhattacharya’s lab. My project focused on identifying the intracellular compartment in which the TMEM protein is located. I loved that my project manifested in so many directions and that I was exposed to a multitude of techniques. I also realized how much I enjoyed research through my work in the lab and I discovered that it is something I never want to stop doing. I cannot thank Dr. Bhattacharya enough for being an incredible mentor and teacher.

COS: What is one specific memory from your time at UA that you'll cherish forever?
Roessle: I was hanging out with one of my close friends freshman year and we decided to go see the Pink Floyd laser show at the planetarium. It is a core memory for me and I think about it sometimes because, even though it was so simple, it was incredible and I will always cherish it. I think it is so important to make time for yourself or you’ll miss out on great experiences with the people around you.

COS: What is next for you after graduation?
Roessle: After I graduate, I plan on moving in with my grandma while I prepare to apply to medical school. I really want to pursue neuropsychiatry and become a psychological healer/researcher! My goal in life is to improve the lives of those suffering from mental illness. I feel my purpose is to understand the cause and implications of these disorders within the human brain and genome, while also providing a safe space for those to experience their emotions. There is no one easy way of combating mental illness. It requires compassionate doctors and determined researchers to truly provide help. I aspire to be that person for someone.
