Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to share with you exciting news regarding the appointments of several positions within the College of Science administration.

Dr. Jeremiah Hackett is the new Associate Dean for Graduate & Postdoctoral Affairs in the College of Science. Jeremiah has been with the University of Arizona since 2007 and serves as an Associate Professor and Associate Department Head of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Prior to joining the university, he received his BS in Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and his PhD in Genetics from the University of Iowa. He was also a CICOR Postdoctoral Scholar in Biology at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Dr. Hackett’s research interests include endosymbiosis and genome evolution in microbial eukaryotes and coral-algal symbiotic relationships.

The College of Science’s new Associate Dean for Research is Dr. Feryal Özel. Feryal is a Professor of Astronomy and Physics at the University of Arizona. She received her BS from Columbia University, her MS from the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, and her PhD in Astrophysics from Harvard University. She was a NASA Hubble fellow and member at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton prior to joining our faculty. Dr. Özel has done pioneering work on the measurement of neutron star radii, which led to new constraints on the equation of state of cold ultra-dense matter, and on the first simulations of the images of low-luminosity black holes that guided the development of interferometric imaging efforts of the Event Horizon Telescope.

Please join me in recognizing Cheryl Tomoeda for her promotion to Assistant Dean for Development and Alumni in the College of Science. Cheryl is an alumna of the college having earned a MS from the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. She has worked as a development officer for the College of Science for over 15 years and has shown exceptional leadership and commitment to the university, the College of Science, and the University Alumni and Development Program. Prior to her appointment in the college, she enjoyed a 22-year career in SLHS as a staff researcher. Under Cheryl’s leadership as Senior Director of Development over the past five years, the college has consistently met or exceeded its fundraising goals.

Bridget Wade Radcliff will serve as the new Director of the Career Centerin the College of Science. Bridget has worked in higher education for over 20 years in advising, support services, and academic administration. She joins us from the College of Agriculture & Life Services (CALS), where she served as the Director of Career Engagement. While at CALS, Bridget focused on supporting the students, faculty, and staff to integrate career development into academic planning and to ensure that the CALS Career Center is offering the relevant resources and support across the college. She earned a BA in English Literature from the University of Utah and MPA in Natural Resource Policy from the University of Arizona.
